MY TRIP TO KRAKOW + WHAT TO SEE

čtvrtek 8. září 2016

Hello guys,
Welcome in my new travel article. Today I´m gonna talk about the city of churches, royal capital city, the city with a rich history and one of the biggest cities in Poland. Yes, I´m talking about Krakow.

Krakow, in the past capital of Poland, in the present one of the most important Polish tourist centers with valuable monuments of different eras, has to be on your list, if you ever planning to visit Europe.
Yesterday, we returned from our 48 hours long trip from Krakow. I was in this amazing city for eight times, and I still think, Krakow is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

You can see typical architecture on every corner and crowded streets smell by a history.
Krakow is city, that is frozen in fairy tale. Literally. The history connected with kings and queens  is almost tangible.
I said, it´s the city of churches, because there´s 180 churches overall! Unbelievable, right?

The Main Square
Krakow can offer you so many amazing spots, so there´s no chance to be bored in this city.

For eight years, that I have been  regularly visiting this city, I have seen a lot of monuments, that I want to share with you, so you can get from your trip the most.

1. THE MAIN SQUARE
First spot is such a mainstream spot, but can you imagine visiting any city without visiting main square? No, me neither.
The main square is located at the center of the city, in The Old Town. Square space is surrounded by historic townhouses and churches. You can enjoy your coffee in one of the cafeterias or buying souvenirs in shops.
There´s a lot of things to see in and nearby square.

St.Mary´s Basilica
  • I recommend St. Mary´s Basilica, which is so beautiful Gothic church and you definitely have to see it! With this church is connected story, The Trumpeter of Krakow, because every hour a trumpet signal is played from the tower. The tune breaks off in mid-stream, to commemorate a trumpeter, who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm.
  • Cloth Hall is also situated in the center. It is one of the city´s most recognizable icons and main element of main market square. You can buy a lot of souvenirs inside.
  • On the upper floor of the hall is Sukiennice Museum. In the gallery are polish paintings and sculpture, gifts from collectors, artists and their families.
  • Underground Museum
  • On the other side, under the hall, and under the square, there is Rynek Underground permanent exhibition, about which most people don´t know. Unusual way, how to tell a history about Krakow and learn new things. And also,  it´s very cheap, as everything.

2. The Wawel Castle and Cathedral
Another amazing, and my favorite, thing is The Wawel Castle with Wawel Cathedral.

Wawel Castle
  • This castle is so beautiful, so I´m out of words. It is most historically and culturally site in Poland. It was built by Casimir III. The Great. For centuries it was the residence of the kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish Statehood. I recommend to take a guide and exploring a lot :)
  • The Cathedral is stunning as well. A 900-years old cathedral has served as coronation site of Polish Monarchs. Also, it was Karol Wojtyla´s favorite church. You know him as a Pope John Paul II.

3. Kazimierz
One of the Pubs in Kazimierz
Kazimierz is a Jewish District in Krakow.
  • You can find here few synagogues, that worth seeing, The Wailing Wall and cemetery, and also, this is a spot where Oscar-winning film, Schindler´s list, was filmed. You can visit here The Schindler´s factory, too, if you have stomach for it.
  • You can try here typical Jewish food in Jewish restaurants with traditional and LIVE Jewish music, the sound of which sprawls trough the streets.
This place is full of amazing pubs and you can feel breathtaking and sad history in buildings.
  • St. Catherine´s Church, is also situated nearby. It suppose to be one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Krakow. It was built in Kazimierz The Great era and murals and paintings is worth seeing, too.

4. SALT MINE

I recommend you to visit Wieliczka , one of the oldest salt mine in the world. This salt mine so absolutely stunning from inside and if you have good guide, as we did, you win.
In shops you can buy a lot of souvenirs from salt as well.

I hope you guys like this article. It was maybe longer or "more with facts" that I use to write, but I hope you like it anyway, haha.
Let me know, if you have ever been to Krakow, or what´s your favorite spot.
With love,
Ally.
